San Antonio Water Bills Are Going Up. Here's How to Clean Your Home With Less Water.

San Antonio water bills are going up, and nothing in your kitchen can change that vote. City Council approved an amended SAWS rate plan on Thursday by a vote of 8 to 3, with increases starting in January 2027. What you can change this week is how much water your cleaning routine uses.

The money pays for replacing aging pipes, upgrading treatment plants and installing backup power, KSAT reports. The average residential bill goes from $56.68 today to $60.59 in 2027. By 2030 it could reach $73.19, a cumulative increase of 23.7% to 29.1%.

Year Rate increase Average monthly bill
Today None $56.68
2027 6.9% $60.59
2028 6.5% $64.53
2029 4.5% to 6.8% Up to $68.92
2030 4% to 6.2% Up to $73.19

Three council members voted no. In June, several members cited leaks, construction delays and trust in SAWS leadership when they held the plan up. I agree the utility owes you answers. Still, we cannot fix the pipes under your street. We can help with the water inside your home.

Cleaning is one of the few routines where you can cut water use right away. Here is what works in a San Antonio kitchen and bathroom:

  • Fill one bucket and stop running the tap
  • Spray shower glass and tile, let the cleaner sit, then wipe with a damp microfiber cloth
  • Wring mops and cloths into the bucket, not under the faucet
  • Wipe counters and appliance exteriors with a damp cloth instead of rinsing them
  • Run the dishwasher and washing machine only with full loads

The bigger savings hide in leaks. Household leaks average nearly 10,000 gallons a year, according to Michigan EGLE, citing EPA WaterSense. Test your toilets this weekend. Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank. If color shows in the bowl after 10 minutes, you have a leak.

A cleaning visit helps here too. During a House Cleaning visit, our team wipes toilet bases, sink fixtures and shower walls. Those are places where slow drips, rust rings and water stains can show up. We do not do plumbing, but if our cleaning professionals spot something, we point it out so you can call a plumber. With Recurring Cleaning, those bathrooms get a close look on a regular schedule.

SAWS also offers a free irrigation consultation, plus rebates and coupons for water saving upgrades, KSAT reported in July. The same story shows how to read your water meter for leaks.

The rates are locked in. The water your home uses is still yours to control.
